The RANEPA Intellectual Competition for International Students

RANEPA

The Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (РАНХиГС / RANEPA) — one of the largest management and economics academies in Russia. Its intellectual competition is explicitly dedicated to international students, and fully remote — and it is itself the nomination mechanism for admission within the government quota, per the official rules.

Last season's window: early February – April 1

Per the official page for international students, last season's competition ran from February 2 to April 1, 2026. The approximate range per our guide (it varies between campuses): document intake from late in the year into early the next, and interviews around February–March. Rules and dates vary by campus and cycle — we'll add the new season's dates as soon as they're officially confirmed.

The opportunity

What is this competition?

The RANEPA open intellectual competition for foreign citizens — that's its official name — is for international applicants to the Academy's programs (Bachelor's/Specialist, and Master's in some tracks). What makes it distinctive is that it isn't just a standalone olympiad: per the official page for international students, it is one of the Academy's two routes for selecting quota students — with admission based on a test plus an interview (собеседование). Winners are considered for admission under the educational quota provided by the Government of the Russian Federation, and the lists of recommended candidates are sent to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The format is fully remote: the first stage is a written test (in Russian, or in English for applicants to English-taught programs), and the second stage is oral, held remotely — with the result sent to you by email. (The Academy's second route to the quota: the Managers of the Future olympiad — mathematics + a multidisciplinary test — if you'd like an alternative track.)

The potential prize

What could you gain?

Winners are considered for admission under the educational quota provided by the Government of the Russian Federation — the recommended lists are sent directly to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
The Academy's fields: management, economics, law, political science and others.
Available for both the Bachelor's and Master's levels (in some tracks).
Nomination is not final admission — the procedures continue through the ministry under the quota. And covering tuition through the quota ≠ covering living costs.

The stages

1
Review the admissions page for international students

Documents are submitted as part of the international admission file — the exact details are on the official admissions page at ranepa.ru.

2
Stage one: a remote written test

In Russian — or in English if you're applying to an English-taught program. Decide your program's language early, because the test language follows it.

3
Stage two: oral, held remotely

After it, you're notified of your nomination for admission — or rejection — by email.

Stage one has a strong language component — study Russian seriously if you're going for a Russian-taught program. The exact document requirements should be checked on the official website before applying.

Common questions
💬What language is the test in?
Stage one is written, in Russian — or in English for applicants to English-taught programs. Decide your program type before you build your study plan.
💬How does it relate to the quota?
This isn't an olympiad separate from admission — per the official page for international students, it's one of the Academy's two ways of selecting quota students (admission based on a test plus an interview), and winners are considered for admission under the educational quota provided by the Government of the Russian Federation, with the recommended lists going directly to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Even so, being nominated is not a guarantee of final admission.
💬Is there an alternative track at the same Academy?
Yes — per the official page, the second route to the quota is the Managers of the Future olympiad (mathematics + a multidisciplinary test). If your field is closer to mathematics, compare the two.
💬Which campus should I apply through?
Rules and dates vary by campus and cycle — check the admissions page of the specific campus you're aiming for.
This opportunity is competitive and not guaranteed — and rules vary by campus, so the final reference is the Academy's official admissions page.
