How Russian olympiads actually work — from inside the regulations
Announcement pages tell you “register and take part”. The official regulations (Положение / Регламент) say something else entirely — and they are what actually governs. We read 8 regulations in full and pulled out what recurs: these rules will meet you in almost any Russian olympiad, so learn them once and use them everywhere.
How this page was built — so you know how far to trust it
Every rule below is read from the text of an official regulation — not from an announcement page and not from a summary. The eight regulations are: ITMO (ПКУ-МК-600-2025) · MADI (Регламент, order 784) · the Financial University (Положение + Регламент) · SPbU domestic · SPbU international in both versions (Bachelor's and Master's) · Izumrud · and the official RANEPA and SibUPK pages.
🔴 And the inclusion rule matters: anything recurring in 3 or more regulations is written here as a “general rule”. Anything we found in only one or two was not generalised — it sits in its own section below, named as such. Because generalising from a single source makes the page lie to a student reading a different olympiad.
🎯 Use this page as a checklist: before registering for any olympiad, run through the ten rules and see what your olympiad says about each. These are the things that cost people opportunities — not a weak file.
🔑 One account only — and the first one counts
If you register more than once, your results will not be combined — and the one that counts is the first registration. This is the most frequently repeated rule across the regulations we read (4 sources).
⚠️ One exception we found: SPbU domestic allows one attempt per language in the foreign-languages subjects, and the highest counts. Otherwise — one account, one attempt.
📧 Your registration isn't complete without a confirmation email
Filling in the form does not mean you're registered. Three regulations tie the completion of registration to an email arriving — and if it doesn't arrive, you're out.
The takeaway: don't assume you're registered. Go looking for the confirmation email — and check your spam folder. And if the announced window passes with nothing, contact the organisers straight away.
📜 The notarised Russian translation — an entry ticket, not a post-win step
This is the most dangerous rule on the page, because students think of it as something you do after winning — when it is in fact a condition for entering the tests at all. And a notarised translation takes weeks and money.
🔴 Start the translation before you register — not after. And this isn't organisational advice: at MADI the translation is a condition for entering the test, meaning without it you are not a participant at all, however strong your file is.
🎓 You're allowed to apply before you graduate
This is the only rule on the page that is entirely in your favour — and a lot of people miss a whole season waiting for a graduation certificate they didn't need. 4 sources accept substitutes.
So if you're in your final year: apply. You upload the diploma later.
🩺 There are four medical certificates — and being late annuls your win
Not one certificate. The recurring requirement across 3 sources: no health contraindications · freedom from HIV · freedom from all types of hepatitis · freedom from tuberculosis — from a medical body in your country of residence.
🔴 These tests take weeks in most countries. And the window after a win is usually one week. Start them the moment you know you've won — better still: ask your local lab about turnaround times now, so you know how many days you'd need.
🏛️ Winning = a recommendation to the ministry — not admission
This is the point most often explained wrongly, in both directions: some say “winning = admission” (an over-promise), and others say “winning doesn't mean anything” (an over-warning that puts people off). The truth, from 4 sources in the text.
🎯 The precise wording: winning gives you an official recommendation from the university to the ministry — that is the door, and the strongest backing you can enter the quota with. And the ministry issues the study referral — that is the decision. Two different things, and both are real.
⏱️ Appeals are narrow or abolished — and your mark can go down
Don't count on “I'll appeal if the result is bad”. In some olympiads appeals are abolished in the text, and in others the window is a single day.
🔴 And note the most dangerous part: at MADI an appeal can lower your mark, not only raise it. So appealing is itself a risk-bearing decision — not a free move.
🎯 One track (or a small number) — and your choice determines your programmes
In most olympiads you can't spread yourself: you pick one track, or three at most — and that choice determines which study programmes you can enter, not just which subjects you sit.
📌 The practical step: look for the subject-to-programme mapping table before you choose your subject — not after. Choosing the wrong subject can close off the very programme you wanted.
🎥 Electronic proctoring records you — and a result can be annulled later
The test doesn't end when you submit. Three regulations provide for recording the session, and one of them gives the committee the right to annul the result after review.
⚠️ So “I got through the test” is not “I'm safe”. Set your environment up properly from the start: a room to yourself, a clear desk, a stable connection — and follow the olympiad's rules to the letter even when it feels like nobody is watching.
📄 The university page promises — the regulation governs
This is the widest gap we've found between two official sources for the same olympiad: the announcement page states the benefit generously, and the regulation either attaches a condition to it, or says nothing about it at all.
That isn't necessarily deception — announcement pages are written to attract, regulations are written to be applied. But the consequence is the same: what gets enforced is the regulation.
🔴 The practical rule: for any benefit you read on an announcement page, go find its clause number in the regulation. If you can't find one — don't build a season on it, and ask the organising committee in writing. And if page and regulation disagree: the regulation wins.
🟡 Three strong things, but found in only two regulations
These did not reach the three-regulation threshold, so we don't call them “general rules”. But their risk or their benefit is worth knowing — and worth checking in your own olympiad's regulation yourself.
🚪 The most important question in any timetable: where is the entry door?
This isn't a rule from a regulation — it's how you read any timetable at all. And it matters more than the nine rules above combined, because it protects you from the kind of mistake that makes you miss an opportunity while you think you have months.
Most olympiads have multiple stages, and the timetable shows the dates of all of them together. And the furthest date on the timetable is the least relevant to you — because it belongs to a stage you only reach by passing the ones before it.
🎯 Ask one question before any date: “which stage does a new participant enter through?” — and look at that stage's date. The rest of the timetable is information, not your deadlines.
🔴 And this actually happened: an olympiad whose timetable ran into October, with its real door (the qualifying stage) closing in March. Anyone who read “until October” missed the door by seven months.
🔀 Families of near-identical names — make sure you're on the right page
The most dangerous trap in Russian olympiads isn't in the conditions — it's in the name. Many universities run more than one olympiad under near-identical names, with completely different routes. These are the families we've identified ourselves:
🎯 Reaching the organiser's site is not the same as reaching your opportunity's page. Many universities run one olympiad platform hosting many groups — and its front page shows the largest one, which is usually the domestic students'. Your track may sit behind a menu item that only appears on internal pages.
🔴 This happened to us: at BSPU we opened the olympiad platform's front page, found it entirely about the olympiad for Russian school students, and concluded it wasn't our opportunity. It was — on the same platform, one click away, inside an internal menu.
⇒ Before you give up on a site or rely on a link, put it through three questions:
1) Who does the page say the audience is? (foreign or domestic · school or university · Bachelor's or Master's)
2) Is the benefit it describes the benefit you came for?
3) How many things does this university run under that name?
And if the front page isn't for you — search the internal menus before you walk away.
🔴 And the difference changes everything: the domestic version's benefit is usually conditional on a ЕГЭ score — the Russian state exam, which you most likely won't sit. Which means that benefit is practically unavailable to you, even if you win.
💬Do these rules apply to every Russian olympiad?▾
The first ten recurred in 3 or more of the 10 regulations we read in full, so they are the dominant pattern, not a uniform law. Every olympiad has its own regulation, and exceptions exist (we've written down the ones we found). Use this page as a checklist to interrogate your olympiad's regulation with — not as a substitute for reading it.
💬Where do I find the regulation for the olympiad I'm interested in?▾
On the olympiad's official site, usually on a page called “Документы” or “Положение” or “Правила”. It's normally a PDF. And it's not the announcement page — the announcement page summarises and puts an optimistic face on things; the regulation is what governs. If you find a contradiction between them, the regulation wins.
💬I don't read Russian — how do I read the regulation?▾
Most regulations are PDFs with a text layer, so machine translation works well enough for general understanding. But be careful: don't make a final decision from a machine translation on something sensitive like dates or eligibility — email the organising committee and ask. That's your right.
💬What should I do first, right now?▾
The notarised Russian translation (rule 3) — because it's the only one that takes weeks and that stops you entering the test at all. After that, ask about turnaround times for the medical tests (rule 5) so you know how many days you'd need if you win. You can start both of those today without having chosen an olympiad yet.
