Culture and Art Olympiad 2026/27 — SPbSUITD
An art and design olympiad for school students run by Saint Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design (SPbSUITD). The qualifying stage is remote and done by uploading artworks; the final stage is in person in Saint Petersburg. Registration opens on 20 October 2026 — it has not opened yet. And international students are eligible to take part: the 2026/27 regulations expressly list those studying abroad among the eligible.

So there is no open door today, and anyone telling you otherwise is not reading the source. 🔴 And there are two different dates — do not mix them up: • Registration closes on 30 January 2027 (inclusive) — that is the date in the counter above. • Uploading the artworks closes on 31 January 2027 (inclusive) — that is the end of the qualifying stage itself. So if you wait until 31 January to register, you are a full day late.

🟢 International students are eligible to take part — and the evidence comes from the regulations in force, not from an overview page. The «Positions on holding the Olympiad … 2026-2027 academic year» (Положение о проведении Олимпиады … 2026-2027 учебный год), clause 3.2, lists who may enter the qualifying stage and includes, in so many words, «лица, осваивающие указанные образовательные программы за рубежом» — i.e. people studying these general basic and secondary education programmes outside Russia. Clause 3.3 repeats the same categories for the final stage.
🏛️ On top of that: the olympiad is No. 7 on the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education's approved list for 2026/27 — the list whose own title says it covers winners and prize-winners who apply to study within the Russian Government quota for foreign citizens and stateless persons.
🔴 But mind this distinction — it is the most important line on the page: eligibility to compete is one thing, an admission benefit is another. Neither the regulations nor the 2026/27 rules of procedure contain any clause about the quota or about admission without entrance examinations — those benefits are stated on the official benefits page alone, and the results page publishes, for international candidates, a main list and a reserve list. ⇒ Being put forward is not a seat.
What is the Culture and Art Olympiad?
A school-students' olympiad run by Saint Petersburg State University of Industrial Technologies and Design (Санкт-Петербургский государственный университет промышленных технологий и дизайна — SPbSUITD, known as «PROMTEKHDIZAYN»). The official «About» page says it has been on the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education's approved list of olympiads since 2009.
The stated aim in the regulations (clause 2.1): to identify creative ability and guide students professionally, to attract the most talented young people into art education, and to measure how well a student can navigate contemporary cultural and artistic reality.
What matters for you: this is not a multiple-choice olympiad. The qualifying stage is assessed on finished artworks you upload as photographs plus an individual assignment in history of art and culture, and the final stage is done by hand, in a studio in Saint Petersburg. So you need a real portfolio and live execution skill — not just revision.
What do you gain if you win?
🔴 Read these four before you build a plan on them:
① And this is not a «scholarship». The olympiad is a competition, and being put forward for the quota is a route to apply, not a seat and not funding. The evidence is in the source itself: the results page publishes a «main list» and a «reserve list» of international candidates — and a reserve list existing means places are limited and the place is not guaranteed.
② Neither the 2026/27 regulations nor the rules of procedure contain a clause about the quota or about admission without entrance examinations. We read both documents in full on 8 September 2026: neither contains the words «квота», «льгота» or «иностранн». Those benefits are published on the «Benefits» and «About» pages — an official source, but not regulation text, and that difference matters to you.
③ And the «without entrance examinations» right is tied to the programme. Not any programme at the university — only those matching the subject complex you competed in, and the two lists differ between the complexes.
④ And SPbSUITD's admission rules impose extra conditions on some categories. The «Benefits for olympiad winners and prize-winners» page on the admissions portal says that winners and prize-winners of school olympiads — «with the exception of olympiads in creative subjects» — need a Unified State Exam result of no less than 75 points. 🟡 We did not find an official text naming «Culture and Art» inside that exception by name — so ask the admissions office before relying on it.
How do you take part?
Registration happens entirely on the official olympiad site, and the regulations set out the path explicitly: pre-registration ⇒ a personal account (личный кабинет) ⇒ upload instructions ⇒ uploading the works. And the door stays shut until 20 October 2026:
📋 Participation is free at both stages — clause 3.6 of the regulations and §6 of the rules of procedure say «<bdi lang="ru">Участие … бесплатное</bdi>» in so many words.
🔴 But there is one explicit funding exception: clause 3.7 says the university funds the olympiad from its own resources «except for the consumable materials participants need to carry out the art-discipline tasks». So your drawing materials and supplies are on you.

The stages — how you reach the final
From 20 October 2026 until 30 January 2027. You choose your subject complex (or both) and the school year you will be assessed against.
Upload photographs of finished artworks (4–5 per contest) to your personal account by 31 January 2027. And if you are in the first complex: plus an individual assignment in history of art and culture within 7 days of receiving it.
Announced within 28 calendar days of the stage's end. Winners and prize-winners are no more than 45% of participants.
20–31 March 2027 in Saint Petersburg. Admission is on an identity document, and registration at the venue is 60 minutes before the start.
Announced within 28 days of the final's last day. A first-degree diploma means winner; second and third degree mean prize-winner. And the diploma is valid for 4 years.
🟢 And one useful provision in the regulations: the winners and prize-winners of last year's final may enter this year's final directly (clause 3.3) — provided they are still studying in the same eligible categories.
🔴 And in the first complex all four contests are compulsory. Missing one of them puts you out of the olympiad (rules of procedure §24).
Tracks and subjects
The olympiad runs separately in two subject complexes, and you may enter both:
Who can take part?
Clause 3.2 says «не ранее 5 класса» — i.e. not earlier than year 5, and the regulations set no upper year. Rules of procedure §2 splits participants into three subgroups: 5–7 · 8–9 · 10 and above.
Clause 3.2 expressly lists «those studying these educational programmes abroad» among those eligible for the qualifying stage, and clause 3.3 repeats it for the final. ⇒ You can register from your own country.
Clause 3.2 expressly covers those studying under family education (семейное образование) or self-education (самообразование) — you do not have to be in a formal school.
Vocational (СПО) students are accepted, but with a limit: the regulations say «students of secondary vocational education programmes in the arts (в области искусств)» — an arts specialism, not just any vocational programme.
The Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education's 2026/27 school-students list — the one whose title assigns it to the quota for educating foreign citizens and stateless persons in Russia.
Clause 5.2 says the parent or legal guardian is the one who confirms they have read the regulations and provides consent for processing the minor's data and publishing their olympiad work.
Your eligibility to compete is settled by the regulations. Using the result in admission, however, is governed by the university's admission rules and the quota rules — read the «What do you gain if you win?» box carefully.

💬Is registration open now? And if not, when does it open?
No — registration has not opened yet.
The official registration page on the olympiad site says literally: «Регистрация будет доступна с 20 октября 2026 года» — i.e. «registration will be available from 20 October 2026».
And rules of procedure §9 confirms it: «Registration is carried out in the period from 20 October 2026 to 30 January 2027 inclusive».
💬I am an international student — can I actually take part?
Yes — and this is not an inference, it is written in the 2026/27 regulations themselves.
Clause 3.2 lists who may enter the qualifying stage, and includes in so many words «people studying the said general basic and secondary education programmes abroad» (лица, осваивающие указанные образовательные программы за рубежом). Clause 3.3 repeats the same categories for the final stage.
On top of that the olympiad is No. 7 on the Ministry of Science's 2026/27 list, whose own title assigns it to the quota for educating foreign citizens and stateless persons in Russia.
💬Can I take part from outside Russia?
At the qualifying stage: yes, without leaving your country.
The qualifying stage is «заочный с применением дистанционных технологий» — remote, using distance-learning technology, through your personal account on the olympiad site (rules of procedure §4). What you do is upload photographs of your artworks and, if you are in the first complex, complete an individual assignment in history of art and culture.
At the final stage: no — you must be in Saint Petersburg. The final is in person, and no remote alternative has been published.
💬Do I have to travel for the final? And where exactly is it?
Yes — the final is held in person in the city of Saint Petersburg, from 20 to 31 March 2027.
This is settled by three sources that agree: the regulations (clauses 3.1 and 3.15), the rules of procedure (§5) and the olympiad's home page, which says: «The final stage of the olympiad is held in person in the city of Saint Petersburg».
⚠️ And the 2026/27 venues, addresses and day-by-day schedule have not been published yet — rules of procedure §17 says each participant is informed of the schedule, place and stream via the site.
💬Is the qualifying stage online? And is there an online test?
The qualifying stage is remote, but it is not an «online test» in the usual sense.
There is no timed question paper you sit in a browser. What happens is: • Uploading photographs of finished artworks — 4–5 works for each creative contest. • Plus an individual assignment in history of art and culture if you are in the first complex — you receive it, complete it and upload it within 7 calendar days.
🟡 And there is no mention of proctoring or camera monitoring in either the 2026/27 regulations or the rules of procedure.
💬Is there a portfolio? And exactly how many works?
Yes — and the portfolio is the qualifying stage itself.
Clause 3.11 of the regulations and rules of procedure §13 set it out: • First complex: 4–5 works for each of the three contests (academic drawing · painting · composition) — so 12–15 works — plus the history of art and culture assignment. • Second complex: 4–5 works for each of the two contests (technical drawing · decorative composition) — so 8–10 works.
⚠️ And the technical requirements for the photographs (dimensions · formats · limits) for 2026/27 are not clearly stated in the official source currently available — the regulations say you receive upload instructions with your personal account after registering.
💬What exactly are the subjects? And can I enter both tracks?
Six disciplines split across two complexes — and yes, you can enter both.
First complex: academic drawing · painting · composition · history of art and culture. At the final all four are compulsory and the maximum is 400 points.
Second complex: technical drawing · decorative composition. At the final it is a single contest in two parts and the maximum is 100 points.
And clause 3.4 says in so many words that participants «have the right to take part in both subject complexes of the Olympiad simultaneously».
💬Is there an English track?
No — and the regulations are decisive on language.
Clause 3.8 says literally: «The working language of the Olympiad is Russian» (Рабочим языком проведения Олимпиады является русский язык).
The officially published materials and instructions are available in Russian, and no English track has been announced for the current season.
💬Does winning help with admission? And what does the quota have to do with international students?
Yes it helps — but in two different ways depending on your situation, so take the whole answer.
① The admission benefit at SPbSUITD: the official benefits page says winners and prize-winners receive a «first-order right — admission to the university without entrance examinations» for the programmes matching the olympiad complex, and the diploma is valid for 4 years.
② And for international students: the same page says that winners and prize-winners who are foreign citizens, stateless persons, including compatriots living abroad, receive a Russian Federation Government quota for the matching programmes. And this is borne out in practice — the results page publishes actual lists of international candidates.
③ 🔴 But that is a route to apply, not a seat. The results page itself publishes a «main list» and a «reserve list» — and a reserve list existing means places are limited.

In short: you can take part, and the benefit is real and officially published — but winning is not automatic admission and not a guaranteed seat.
💬Are travel, accommodation and visa funded?
No — and no official source says they are.
We read the 2026/27 regulations and rules of procedure in full, plus the «About», «Benefits», «Registration», «Results» and «Archive» pages — not one of them mentions travel, accommodation, visa, insurance or meals.
What the source does say: participation at both stages is free (clause 3.6), and the university funds the organisation except for the consumable materials needed for the art tasks (clause 3.7) — so your drawing materials are on you.
🔴 And the final being in person does not mean anyone is paying for your ticket. If you need to be sure, ask the olympiad movement department ([email protected]) before you book.
💬What has not been announced yet for 2026/27?
Quite a lot that matters — and it is better you know now:
• This season's conditions, requirements and task formats — the regulations (clause 4.2) oblige the organiser to publish them before 1 October, and what is up now is from 2025/26. • The technical requirements for uploading photographs (dimensions · formats · limits). • Whether there are restrictions on graphics software in qualifying-stage works. • The form and duration of the history-of-art-and-culture task at the final. • The final's day-by-day schedule, venues, addresses and stream allocation. • A list of the tools and materials the participant must bring.
🟡 And our rule: we have carried over no 2025/26 figure as though it were this season's. When the documents come out, this page will be updated.
💬I saw an announcement about a preparatory course in history of art — is it required to take part?
No, it is not required — and this matters.
On 31 August 2026 the «Small Academy of Fashion Technologies» at SPbSUITD announced enrolment for a distance course in history of art and culture (from 14 September 2026 to 31 May 2027, for a fee), and the announcement says it «suits those planning to apply to creative programmes, and also those intending to take part in the Culture and Art olympiad».
🔴 But it is a separate, paid course — not part of the olympiad and not a condition for entering it. Neither the regulations nor the rules of procedure mention it, and participation in the olympiad is free under clause 3.6.
Every figure and quotation on this page comes from the official 2026/27 regulations («Положение … 2026-2027 учебный год») and the official rules of procedure for the same season, from the official olympiad site (olimp.prouniver.ru) and from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education's 2026/27 list — all read on 8 September 2026. And registration has not opened yet — it opens on 20 October 2026.
